•             The Lullaby Trust recommends a room temperature of 16 to 20°C for babies. In that range, a lightweight, well-fitting sleep bag is comfortable.

•             Most baby sleeping bags are chosen by weight, not age, so check the weight range on each product.

•             The bag should fit well around the neck and shoulders so your baby cannot wriggle down inside.

•             Do not add a blanket on top of a sleeping bag.

•             To check whether your baby is too hot or cold, feel their chest or the back of their neck.

For tog, follow the guide from the sleeping bag’s own manufacturer. The Lullaby Trust notes that it does not give a general temperature-to-tog table, because what your baby wears underneath and the design of each bag both make a difference. If the room is cooler, add a layer of clothing under the bag or choose a higher tog bag rather than adding blankets.

A good deal is one that fits, keeps your baby safe and gets plenty of wear. Here is a short checklist to use before you add anything to your basket:

1.          Size and remaining season. Winter coats and snowsuits bought in November need to last until spring, so many parents buy the next size up. Check the height and weight on the size chart, not just the age.
